Dr Shresth Tayal (far left), Glaciologist at The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI) leads his team over a bridge toward the fast reducing Rathong Glacier below the 6678 meter Rathong Peak (snow covered peak at left) after a three day hike in the North East Indian state of Sikkim close to the Nepalese border. Considered to be a themometre of the environment, it has been chosen by TERI to be a test case of environmental damage being done in India and China. Dr. Tayal is conducting three dimensional tests that include measuring the depth of the ice to form concrete conclusions on the fate of the glacier. The Indian Government is denying the glaciers' demise despite data suggesting it has been reduced by more than over 80% in the last 42 years.
