25 APRIL 2012, Chak Padri Village, Rampur block, Jaunpur District, Uttar Pradesh, India..Savitri, 40 years old with four children (centre in orange and pink sari) from Raipur village sits with local village women gathered for the Sabha (meeting) anchored by Female Village Head and Elected Womens Representatives on engendering planning at Chak Padri village Rampur block..After receiving training Savriti contested the local elections and was elected at the first try to the Panchayet  or local community council..Says Savriti : " I am able to get get out of my house now that I have knowledge of my rights. I like meeting people and doing things. My husband is very supportive. He is a day labourer in Varanasi but says I must go if it is to our advantage"..The UNDP/ IKEA Foundation are collaborating on long term projects in  Rampur block  to promote women's empowerment through Swaayam. Swaayam - meaning 'by oneself' - is a women's social ,economic political and legal empowerment project implemented since 2009 across 500 villages with the aim of giving women the power to transform their own lives and the lives of their children and communities.
